Behind the Canvas - Lazy Doodle Designs

I’m Libbie Payne and I’m from Hanover, Virginia but I currently go to school at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

GENERAL NEEDLEPOINT

How did you learn to needlepoint? What was your first needlepoint project?

After a break up I wanted to find something to fill my time. My mom had recently gotten back into needlepointing and suggested that I begin as well. Once I started, I was hooked! My first ever needlepoint project was a light blue vintage Ford Bronco. It’s my dream car so I figured it would be a good one to start out with.

What is your favorite stitch? What stitch are you hoping to learn/do next?

I’m basketweave all the way, it’s always so satisfying to see the pattern on the back of the canvas when it’s finished! I don’t have a specific stitch I’ve been looking at, but I love to research new stitches to try out anytime I have a large background. I did the half cross tent stitch for the background of the Penny Linn “No Skinny Dipping… alone” canvas and I loved how it turned out!

What are your favorite threads to use?

My favorite is just the classic DMC Coton Perle, I like their wide range of colors and its affordability.

ABOUT YOUR DESIGNS

What made you want to paint your own pieces?

I’ve always been a creative person and I wasn’t finding some of the canvases that I was imagining in my head, so I figured out how to design and paint them myself.

Describe your canvases in three words:

Fun, colorful, eclectic

What inspires you most when creating new designs?

I’m most inspired by television shows and movies that I’m watching, nostalgia from my childhood, as well as current trends.

What has been your favorite canvas to paint?

The Bridgerton canvas has been the most fun to paint, I love all of the small details, especially the hanging wisteria.

What has been your favorite canvas to stitch?

I loved the whole process of stitching the Legally Blonde canvas, from picking out all of the different shades of pink threads, to finding a unique background stitch to tie it all together.

What is one piece of advice for painting your own canvas?

The thing that helps me out the most when I’m painting is getting down a good base item. Once I paint one full part of the canvas, I’m easily able to count off everything else from that.

ABOUT YOU

Where is your favorite place to stitch?

With my friends or while watching a show or movie.

If you're not needlepointing you're…

Attending class, working out, hanging out with my friends, or shopping/antiquing!

What three items do you always have in your project bag?

A pair of scissors, a needle threader, and extra needles.

What shows are you currently watching?

Shameless, New Girl, and Glee, Gossip Girl

What is your favorite podcast?

I’ve never really been able to get into listening to podcasts, but I’ve listened to Gals on the Go and really enjoyed it.

Who is your favorite needlepoint or non-needlepoint follow on Instagram right now?

I love Sadie Loving (@sadieloving) for shopping guides and inspo, we have similar styles so I’m always watching her hauls looking for what to buy next.

If time and money were no issue, what type of needlepoint project would you want to do?

My great grandmother stitched blue and white chinoiserie cushions for cane-back chairs that were passed down to my mom. I would love to make something like them one day.
